They represent an entirely new direction for this conference.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keynote speakers and topics for the conference include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Susan V. Donaldson<\/strong>, professor emerita at <strong>William and Mary University<\/strong>, who will speak on &#8220;the politics of invisibility&#8221; as it informs the three writers&#8217; engagements with Jim Crow segregation in the South<\/li><li><strong>Suzanne Marrs<\/strong>, professor emerita at <strong>Millsaps College<\/strong>, who will reflect on her professional and personal relationships with Eudora Welty as the author&#8217;s friend and biographer<\/li><li><strong>Jerry W. Ward Jr.<\/strong>, professor emeritus at <strong>Dillard University<\/strong>, who will discuss what he calls &#8220;the tragicomedy of Mississippi&#8217;s histories&#8221; in novels by Faulkner and Wright, and a pair of short stories by Welty<\/li><li>Library lecturer <strong>Carl Rollyson<\/strong>, professor emeritus at <strong>Baruch College, City University of New York<\/strong>, who will give a &#8220;biography&#8221; of his own recent two-volume biography of Faulkner, recounting some of the formative figures and scenes that led to the making of the work<\/li><li><strong>Malcolm Wright<\/strong>, grandson of Richard Wright, who will lead a screening and discussion of the 1976 film adaptation of his grandfather&#8217;s short story &#8220;The Man Who Was Almost A Man&#8221;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1328625648\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;creativeASIN=1328625648&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=thelocalvoice-20&#038;linkId=3cb1f58e24eed1b50cfadaccdbfd08ef\" rel=\"noopener\"><u><p style=\"color:#0024FF\";>The Collected Stories of Eudora Welty<\/p><\/u><\/a>\n\n\n\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1328625648\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;creativeASIN=1328625648&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=thelocalvoice-20&#038;linkId=2144cec10e1051b9d88a585c09f92777\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/\/ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/widgets\/q?_encoding=UTF8&#038;MarketPlace=US&#038;ASIN=1328625648&#038;ServiceVersion=20070822&#038;ID=AsinImage&#038;WS=1&#038;Format=_SL250_&#038;tag=thelocalvoice-20\" ><\/a>\n\n\n\n<p>This year also marks the inaugural <strong>Ann J. Abadie Lecture<\/strong> in Southern Studies at the conference. This lecture series is sponsored by the <strong>Center for the Study of Southern Culture<\/strong> and honors its longtime associate director, <strong>Ann Abadie<\/strong>, who was also a founding figure of the Faulkner conference and a co-editor of dozens of the volumes of conference proceedings published by the University Press of Mississippi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Our first Abadie lecturer is the distinguished poet Natasha Trethewey, a Mississippi native and eminent writer who is supremely qualified to speak about the great trio of Mississippi writers who preceded her,&#8221; Watson said. &#8220;Professor Trethewey will read from her poetry and offer some remarks on the role that Faulkner, Welty and Wright have played in her life and work.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Watson said he hopes to deepen understanding of Faulkner&#8217;s work by placing it in the context of Mississippi literature itself, especially as represented by the two other major figures from the state&#8217;s literary history whose careers overlapped with Faulkner&#8217;s own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B082T2DBT3\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;creativeASIN=B082T2DBT3&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=thelocalvoice-20&#038;linkId=440b75118b0f4750f5aadcacf1abca2e\" rel=\"noopener\"><u><p style=\"color:#0024FF\";>Black Boy [Seventy-fifth Anniversary Edition]<\/p><\/u><\/a>\n\n\n\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B082T2DBT3\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;creativeASIN=B082T2DBT3&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=thelocalvoice-20&#038;linkId=647a185ab62afcb5f26014d35ac0f496\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/\/ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/widgets\/q?_encoding=UTF8&#038;MarketPlace=US&#038;ASIN=B082T2DBT3&#038;ServiceVersion=20070822&#038;ID=AsinImage&#038;WS=1&#038;Format=_SL250_&#038;tag=thelocalvoice-20\" ><\/a>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Bringing the three together will give us a more prismatic view of Mississippi&#8217;s and the South&#8217;s \u2013 and the nation&#8217;s \u2013 history, society and culture than we could get from any of the three writers alone,&#8221; he said. &#8220;By summoning Welty and Wright to help illuminate Faulkner, we&#8217;ll also, of course, at the same time, be using Faulkner to illuminate Welty and Wright, and the latter two writers to illuminate each other.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Registration for the four days of events is $100 per person and $50 for students.
