The nation\u2019s highest honor in the folk and traditional arts includes an award of $25,000 to each of the nine recipients, who will be featured in a film that will debut on November 17, 2021 on arts.gov.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe diverse art forms of the National Heritage Fellows allow us to experience and appreciate the rich cultural traditions that make up America,\u201d said <strong>Ann Eilers<\/strong>, acting chairman for the National Endowment for the Arts. \u201cIt is inspiring how these artistic practices continue the legacy of generations past, while blending contemporary elements as they continue into the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2021 NEA National Heritage Fellows are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arts.gov\/honors\/heritage\/cedric-burnside\"><strong>Cedric Burnside<\/strong><\/a>, Hill Country Blues Musician from <strong>Ashland, Mississippi<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A blues guitarist, drummer, singer, and songwriter, Burnside tells the story of the Black American experience from the heart of the North Mississippi Hill Country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2KBFUWQY8MA\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arts.gov\/honors\/heritage\/tagumpay-mendoza-de-leon\"><strong>Tagumpay De Leon<\/strong><\/a>, Rondalla Musician from <strong>Burbank, California<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A master teacher and performer of\u00a0rondalla, the traditional <strong>Spanish<\/strong>-influenced music from the <strong>Philippines<\/strong>, De Leon promotes the tradition to uplift the heritage of the Filipinx diasporic community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Sp9nEW8s73E\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arts.gov\/honors\/heritage\/anita-fields-osage\"><strong>Anita Fields (Osage)<\/strong><\/a>, Osage Ribbon Worker from <strong>Tulsa, Oklahoma<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A multidisciplinary artist who maintains longstanding Osage ribbon work practices while creating her own contemporary designs, Fields aims to dispel myths and stereotypes surrounding Native people through her work with clay and textiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.arts.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/large\/public\/images\/6%20Ribbonwork-blanket-rs.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Woman\u2019s ribbon work blanket<br>Collection of Anita Fields, worn by daughter Welana Queton<br>Photo Credit Tom Fields<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arts.gov\/honors\/heritage\/los-lobos\"><strong>Los Lobos<\/strong><\/a>, Mexican-American Band from <strong>Los Angeles, California<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A Mexican-American music band influenced by the deep and soulful Mexican and Latin American sounds they grew up with, Los Lobos also integrated the American vernacular traditions of blues, rock-n-roll, conjunto, and jazz into their own unique sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tao8rbrnfbc\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arts.gov\/honors\/heritage\/joanie-madden\"><strong>Joanie Madden<\/strong><\/a>, Irish Flute Player from <strong>Yonkers, New York<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the great Irish flute and whistle players of her generation, Madden has led the all-female group, Cherish the Ladies, since its inception more than 35 years ago and passionately champions the advancement of traditional Irish music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6RmdsMZXEOU\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arts.gov\/honors\/heritage\/reginald-reggio-hoofer-mclaughlin\"><strong>Reginald \u201cReggio The Hoofer\u201d McLaughlin<\/strong><\/a>, Tap Dancer from <strong>Chicago, Illinois<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A master of tap dance known for his distinctive \u201choofing\u201d style, McLaughlin has tapped his way from the Chicago subways to a worldwide stage. He preserves the tradition through educational programs that continue to energize the artform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe title=\"vimeo-player\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/85251711\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arts.gov\/honors\/heritage\/nellie-vera-sanchez\"><strong>Nellie Vera S\u00e1nchez<\/strong><\/a>, Mundillo Master Weaver from <strong>Moca, Puerto Rico<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A tradition bearer of\u00a0mundillo, the intricate bobbin lace tradition that is centered in the western Puerto Rican municipality of Moca, S\u00e1nchez was influential in establishing the Museo del Mundillo and describes the art form as \u201cher way of life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.arts.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/portrait\/public\/images\/2021-Heritage-Nellie-Vera-Sanchez.jpeg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Photo by Sandra I. Rodr\u00edguez<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arts.gov\/honors\/heritage\/winnsboro-easter-rock-ensemble\"><strong>Winnsboro Easter Rock Ensemble<\/strong><\/a>, Easter Rock Spiritual Ensemble from <strong>Winnsboro, Louisiana<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Winnsboro Easter Rock Ensemble maintains a rare women-led African-American traditional spiritual ritual first practiced by enslaved Africans in the antebellum period, Easter Rock, which combines music and food with Christian and West African influences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WqyVZnOYMiw\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arts.gov\/honors\/heritage\/tom-davenport\"><strong>Tom Davenport<\/strong><\/a>, Filmmaker, Documentarian, and Media Curator from <strong>Delaplane, Virginia<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Founder and director of Folkstreams, a nonprofit dedicated to finding, preserving, contextualizing, and showcasing documentary films on American traditional cultures, Davenport is the 2021 recipient of the Bess Lomax Hawes National Heritage Fellowship, presented in recognition of an individual who has made a significant contribution to the preservation and awareness of cultural heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.arts.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/portrait\/public\/images\/2021-Heritage-Tom-Davenport.png?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Photo by Gabriella Garcia-Pardo\/ Hypothetical Films<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For the second year, the National Endowment for the Arts will commemorate the NEA National Heritage Fellows with a film that visits with the fellows where they live and practice these traditional art forms. On November 17, 2021, the virtual presentation will be webcast free to the public at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arts.gov\">arts.gov<\/a>. More information will follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><u>About the National Heritage Fellowships<\/u><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The National Heritage Fellowships are the nation\u2019s highest honor in the folk and traditional arts. Including the 2021 class, the Arts Endowment has awarded 458 National Heritage Fellowships, recognizing artists working in more than 200 distinct art forms, including Japanese classical dancer <strong>Gertrude Yukie Tsutsumi<\/strong>, Tejano musician and singer <strong>Manuel &#8220;Cowboy&#8221; Donley<\/strong>, Passamaquoddy basketmaker <strong>Molly Neptune Parker<\/strong>, leatherworker <strong>James F. Jackson<\/strong>, oud player and composer <strong>Rahim AlHaj<\/strong>, and quilting community advocate <strong>Carolyn Mazloomi<\/strong>. More information about the National Heritage Fellows is available on the Arts Endowment\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arts.gov\/honors\/heritage\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fellowship recipients are nominated by the public, often by members of their own communities, and then judged by a panel of experts in the folk and traditional arts.
