Oxford’s Michael Carter wins first place in the mural design contest “Paint the Joint”<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Holly Springs CDC<\/strong> of Holly Springs<\/strong>, Miss., was awarded ($1000) a grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission<\/strong>. This grant is a portion of the $1.3 million in grants the Commission will award in 2020-2021 and has been used to fund the creation of three large paintings for public display celebrating African American Culture<\/strong>. The grants are made possible by continued funding from the Mississippi State Legislature<\/strong> and the National Endowment for the Arts<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are excited to announce the winners of our Black Culture Celebration<\/strong> community project, a mural design contest \u201cPaint The Joint\u201d<\/strong>. The winners are Ms. Jenique Gulledge<\/strong> (3rd Place), Anielcia Myers<\/strong> (2nd Place) both from Holly Springs, and Mr. Michael Carter<\/strong> (1st Place) of Oxford, Miss.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Holly Springs CDC awarded MAC funds were allocated to purchase arts supplies and pay artists fees for each contest winner to produce a painting for public display. Ms. Gulledge\u2019s painting is on display at GraceLand Too<\/strong>, 200 E Gholson Ave., Ms. Myers\u2019 work will be on view at Mr. Caldwell\u2019s Aikei Pro’s Record Shop<\/strong>, 125 N.Center Street. Mr. Carter is presently installing his mural of lifelong Holly Springs residents internationally celebrated Cotton Patch Soul Blues Legends<\/a> David \u201cJunior\u201d Kimbrough<\/strong> and his sons David Jr. 3rd<\/strong>, Kinney<\/strong>, and Robert Sr<\/strong>. The mural is located in Blues Alley<\/strong> at E. Falconer Ave. on the NY Beauty Outlet Building<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mural design contest \u201cPaint The Joint\u201d was organized by Ms. Amy Verdon<\/strong> from grassroots group Son and Friends of Junior Kimbrough<\/strong>, under the direction of Mr. Clencie Cotton<\/strong>, Holly Springs CDC, with cooperation of Mayor Kelvin Buck<\/strong>. Matching funds for our community project were provided by FANCY!<\/strong>. This project is supported in part by funding from the Mississippi Arts Commission, a state agency, and in part, from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mississippi Arts Commission, a state agency, serves the residents of the state by providing grants that support programs to enhance communities; assist artists and arts organizations; promote the arts in education; and celebrate Mississippi\u2019s cultural heritage.\u00a0 Established in 1968, the Mississippi Arts Commission is funded by the Mississippi Legislature, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Mississippi Endowment for the Arts<\/strong> at the Community Foundation for Mississippi<\/strong> and other private sources. The agency serves as an active supporter and promoter of arts in community life and arts education.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
