Burnside, and Junior Kimbrough, among Others Who Have Influenced The Black Keys<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>On May 14, <strong>The Black Keys<\/strong> release their tenth studio album,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/qprime.us14.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=02196e5ebcb73fa4f36884e3e&amp;id=43c8a0bf1f&amp;e=858310d6fd\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>Del<\/strong><\/em><\/a><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/qprime.us14.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=02196e5ebcb73fa4f36884e3e&amp;id=d0dac75af1&amp;e=858310d6fd\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>ta\u00a0Kream<\/strong><\/em><\/a>,\u00a0via<strong> Nonesuch Records<\/strong>. The record\u00a0celebrates the band\u2019s roots, featuring eleven <strong>Mississippi hill country blues <\/strong>standards that they have loved since they were teenagers, before they were a band, including songs by <strong>R. L. Burnside<\/strong> and <strong>Junior Kimbrough<\/strong>, among others.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Black-Keys.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Black-Keys.jpg?resize=600%2C400\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-110467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Black-Keys.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Black-Keys.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dan Auerbach<\/strong> and <strong>Patrick Carney<\/strong> recorded\u00a0<em>Delta Kream<\/em>\u00a0at Auerbach\u2019s <strong>Easy Eye Sound <\/strong>studio in <strong>Nashville<\/strong>; they were joined by musicians <strong>Kenny Brown<\/strong> and <strong>Eric Deaton<\/strong>, long-time members of the bands of blues legends including R. L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough. The album takes its name from <strong>William Eggleston<\/strong>\u2019s iconic Mississippi photograph that is on its cover.\u00a0<em>Delta\u00a0Kream\u00a0<\/em>is available for pre-order on all formats\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/qprime.us14.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=02196e5ebcb73fa4f36884e3e&amp;id=ac75f83c66&amp;e=858310d6fd\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Auerbach says of the album, \u201cWe made this record to honor the Mississippi hill country blues tradition that influenced us starting out. These songs are still as important to us today as they were the first day Pat and I started playing together and picked up our instruments. It was a very inspiring session with Pat and me along with Kenny Brown and Eric Deaton in a circle, playing these songs. It felt so natural.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><br>Carney concurs, \u201cThe session was planned only days in advance and nothing was rehearsed. We recorded the entire album in about ten hours, over two afternoons, at the end of the\u00a0<em>\u2018Let\u2019s Rock<\/em>\u2019\u00a0tour.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, the band shares\u00a0<em>Delta\u00a0Kream<\/em>\u2019s first single \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/qprime.us14.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=02196e5ebcb73fa4f36884e3e&amp;id=5fc2a8a75e&amp;e=858310d6fd\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Crawling Kingsnake<\/strong><\/a>.\u201d Auerbach says of the song: \u201cI first heard [John Lee] Hooker\u2019s version in high school. My uncle Tim would have given me that record. But our version is definitely Junior Kimbrough\u2019s take on it. It\u2019s almost a disco riff!\u201d Carney adds, &#8220;We fell into this drum intro; it&#8217;s kind of accidental. The ultimate goal was to highlight the interplay between the guitars. Burnsides\u2019 &#8220;Busted&#8221; and Junior Kimbrough\u2019s \u201cDo The Romp\u201d on their debut album,\u00a0<em><strong>The Big Come Up<\/strong><\/em>; to their subsequent signing to <strong>Fat Possum Records<\/strong>, home to many of their musical heroes; and to their EP of Junior Kimbrough covers<strong>,\u00a0<em>Chulahoma<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to paying homage to these Mississippi blues legends with\u00a0<em>Delta Kream<\/em>, The Black Keys are working with\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/qprime.us14.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=02196e5ebcb73fa4f36884e3e&amp;id=92024c212e&amp;e=858310d6fd\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>VisitMississippi<\/strong><\/a>, the state&#8217;s tourism organization, to sponsor new individual markers for\u00a0\u00a0R. L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough\u00a0on the <strong>Mississippi Blues Trail<\/strong>, which\u00a0tell\u00a0the stories of the state\u2019s blues artists both renowned and obscure through words and images. (Both musicians are currently acknowledged on a group marker in <strong>Holly Springs<\/strong> entitled &#8220;Hill Country Blues.&#8221;) The new markers will be erected in the proposed locations of Holly Springs and<strong> Chulahoma<\/strong>, Mississippi, places closely associated with Burnside and Kimbrough\u2014a fitting tribute to these architects of Hill Country Blues and further recognition of their enduring contributions to American music.
