{"id":110018,"date":"2021-03-18T07:30:00","date_gmt":"2021-03-18T12:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=110018"},"modified":"2021-03-17T20:43:29","modified_gmt":"2021-03-18T01:43:29","slug":"oxford-film-festival-returns-march-24-28-new-hybrid-format-combines-in-person-and-online-events","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/oxford-film-festival-returns-march-24-28-new-hybrid-format-combines-in-person-and-online-events\/","title":{"rendered":"Oxford Film Festival Returns March 24\u201328: New Hybrid Format Combines In-Person and Online Events"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordfilmfest.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The 18th Annual Oxford Film Festival<\/a><\/strong> will be a hybrid presentation across multiple venues: an open-air outdoor theater, drive-ins, and a full month of virtual screenings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The premiere-rich schedule will showcase 158 films, including 33 features (15 narrative and 18 documentary), 115 short films (narrative, documentary, LGBTQIA+, ambition and experimental, student, and Mississippi-based productions), 19 music videos, and 11 projected art works, and 5 scripts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From Wednesday through Sunday, March 24\u201328, screenings will be held in the <strong>Oxford Commons<\/strong> area in two specially designed open-air circus tents, in the <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/malco.com\/cinema_shows_new.php?theatre_pick=109\" target=\"_blank\">Malco Outdoor Cinema<\/a><\/strong>, and at a special drive-in at <strong>Oxford High School<\/strong>. From April 1\u201330, virtual cinema screenings will be offered globally via <strong>Eventive<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/2021-01-25-Oxford-Film-Fest.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/2021-01-25-Oxford-Film-Fest.jpg?resize=336%2C189\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-109234\" width=\"336\" height=\"189\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/2021-01-25-Oxford-Film-Fest.jpg?w=620&amp;ssl=1 620w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/2021-01-25-Oxford-Film-Fest.jpg?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 336px) 100vw, 336px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The Oxford Film Festival producers are taking the lead in procedures, measures, and protocols to prioritize the safety of its staff, attending filmmakers, and film fans, but also understand the need to allay any fears or concerns the community might have with attending a festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs we continue to prepare, we want to be very clear about the aggressive steps we are taking in order to make our film festival safe so our patrons can begin to get back to enjoying the movie going experience in the company of other people again,\u201d said Executive Director<strong> Melanie Addington<\/strong>. \u201cTherefore, we are being very careful with a measured approach utilizing the open-air theater\u2014with safety always first. We have spent the past year safely providing films via drive-in and will include that experience in this year\u2019s festival. We will monitor COVID and weather concerns and will make changes as needed closer to the event.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oxford Film Festival also announced an impressive lineup of in-person and virtual panels and parties to both bring audiences and film fans back together safely, as well as continue to open up the popular film festival to a state-wide, national, and international audience virtually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oxford Film Festival will also offer in-person filmmaker panels including a <strong>Living History Panel<\/strong> focused on archival filmmaking, a <strong>Community Film Table Read <\/strong>with filmmaker <strong>Chasity Nicole<\/strong>, and a live performance by Oxford\u2019s acting royalty <strong>Johnny <\/strong>and <strong>Susan McPhail<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the biggest and most fun events of past film festivals have been the parties. These are open to anyone with a pass (a VIP pass is $175, or $50 for students), and this year\u2019s events will be exciting. Wednesday, March 24, from 5\u20137 pm at the<strong> Oxford Conference Center Tent <\/strong>features a game night celebrating the film <strong><em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/2021oxff.eventive.org\/films\/5ff924a8b74511007ebe5bfc\" target=\"_blank\">Murder, Bury, Win<\/a><\/em><\/strong>. This VIP meet-and-greet includes appetizers and cocktails, and attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite board games to share some in light-hearted competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thumbor.forbes.com\/thumbor\/fit-in\/1200x0\/filters%3Aformat%28jpg%29\/https%3A%2F%2Fspecials-images.forbesimg.com%2Fimageserve%2F5f9c998ad57693784988a8b9%2F0x0.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption><em>Murder, Bury, Win<\/em>: Three friends have created a board game, MURDER BURY WIN, and they think it has what it takes to become a bestseller on the indie charts. Friday, March 26 features a block party atmosphere with cosmic bowling in <strong>Premier Lanes<\/strong>, free food outside at the fire pit, <strong>\u201cZombie Karaoke\u201d<\/strong> in the outdoor theater, and projections in the alleyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.documentary.org\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/large\/public\/images\/sponsored-films\/weedwinemaintitle_r7a.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption><em>Weed &amp; Wine<\/em>: Continents apart from one another, two farming families aim to reinvent themselves on their land. One family\u2014a strong-willed French matriarch and the son she raised among her vines\u2014tends a centuries-old, biodynamic vineyard in the South\u00adern Rh\u00f4ne. Across the ocean in Humboldt, California, another family\u2014a brash father and his more reserved son\u2014carefully manage a state-recognized, organic cannabis farm. The feature documen\u00adtary WEED &amp; WINE interweaves their stories, urging compar\u00adisons and teasing out contradictions between France\u2019s revered winemaking traditions and the artisan culture emerging along\u00adside the legal cannabis industry.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>At the Malco Outdoor Theater, Saturday, March 27, will be a combined <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/2021oxff.eventive.org\/films\/5ff924a9b74511007ebe5c37\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Weed &amp; Wine<\/a><\/em><\/strong> party celebrating the feature documentary of the same name and a live music event sponsored by <strong>The Local Voice.<\/strong> To complement <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/2021oxff.eventive.org\/films\/5ffebcd91536e7005a833d6a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Without Getting Killed or Caught<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, a documentary about famed Texas singer-songwriter <strong>Guy Clark<\/strong>, TLV will host a <strong>Songwriters in the Round<\/strong> event with Oxford singer-songwriters <strong>Tate Moore, Moonpie Curtis, Keith Moore<\/strong>, and <strong>Randy Weeks<\/strong>. Live music is back, y\u2019all (and safely outdoors)!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sunday, March 28 the festival will close with a birthday party and awards ceremony! Executive Director Melanie Addington will celebrate another trip around the sun, while the film festival itself turns 18.
