{"id":109809,"date":"2021-03-03T12:38:47","date_gmt":"2021-03-03T18:38:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=109809"},"modified":"2021-03-03T12:38:54","modified_gmt":"2021-03-03T18:38:54","slug":"the-2021-oxford-film-festival-announces-opening-and-closing-night-selections-panels-and-parties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/the-2021-oxford-film-festival-announces-opening-and-closing-night-selections-panels-and-parties\/","title":{"rendered":"The 2021 Oxford Film Festival Announces Opening and Closing Night Selections, Panels and Parties"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The<strong> Oxford Film Festival<\/strong> <strong>(OFF) <\/strong>recently announced the opening and closing night selections for the festival as well as a robust lineup of panels and parties as OFF ramps up for a hybrid event taking place later in March and all of April. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Megan Petersen<\/strong> and <strong>Hannah Black<\/strong>\u2019s previously announced family road trip drama\u00a0<strong><em>Drought<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0will serve as the film festival\u2019s opening night selection, with a double-feature offering of <strong>Nicholas Bruckman<\/strong>\u2019s powerful documentary\u00a0<strong><em>Not Going Quietly<\/em><\/strong>, and <strong>Tate Taylor<\/strong>\u2019s comedy\u00a0<strong><em>Breaking News in Yuba County<\/em><\/strong>.<br>\u00a0<br>Oxford Film Festival also announced an impressive lineup of in-person and virtual panels and parties to both bring audiences and film fans back together safely, as well as continue to open up the popular film festival to a state-wide, national, and international audience virtually.<br>\u00a0<br>As previously announced, from March 24\u201328, screenings will all be held in the <strong>Oxford Commons<\/strong> area in two specially designed open-air circus tents, <strong>Malco Outdoor Cinema<\/strong>, and a special drive-in at the <strong>Oxford High School<\/strong>. Throughout April Virtual Cinema screenings will be offered globally via Eventive.<br>\u00a0<br>Oxford Film Festival Executive Director <strong>Melanie Addington<\/strong>, said, \u201cThese three films exemplify the best of what the Oxford Film Festival offers with its programming.\u00a0<em>Drought<\/em>\u00a0is a multiple award-winner on the circuit,\u00a0<em>Not Going Quietly<\/em>\u00a0gives rare insight into the experience of living with a disability, and\u00a0<em>Breaking News in Yuba County<\/em>\u00a0is a certified crowd pleaser courtesy of Tate Taylor. In year one, we showcased his talents as a young filmmaker, and eighteen years later we are all grown up and can\u2019t wait to once again showcase his work on this Mississippi made film. The film moves alongside activist <strong>Ady Barkan<\/strong> diagnosed with ALS at age 32 and who, in spite of declining physical abilities, embarks on a nationwide campaign for healthcare reform, shedding light on healthcare inequality. Set to premiere at the upcoming SXSW Film Festival, the film explores the sacrifices and impact that many make for social change through a personal, heartfelt, and hopeful lens.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/BNreaking-News-in-Yuba-COunty.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/BNreaking-News-in-Yuba-COunty.jpg?resize=300%2C169\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-109812\"\/><\/a><figcaption><em>Breaking News in Yuba County<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><br>\u00a0Also screening on closing night will be a special free-to-the-public presentation of <strong>Natchez<\/strong>-filmed comedy\u00a0<strong><em>Breaking News in Yuba County<\/em><\/strong>. After her husband goes missing, Sue Buttons (<strong>Allison Janney<\/strong>), an underappreciated suburban wife, gets a taste of being a local celebrity\u00a0as she embarks on a city-wide search in Yuba County to find him. In an effort to prolong her newfound fame, she stumbles into hilarious hijinks as her world turns upside down, dodging a wanna-be mobster (<strong>Awkwafina<\/strong>), a relentless local policewoman (<strong>Regina Hall<\/strong>), her half-sister (<strong>Mila Kunis<\/strong>) a local news reporter desperate for a story, and her husband\u2019s dead-beat brother (<strong>Jimmi Simpson<\/strong>), who all set out to uncover the truth behind the disappearance. The film also includes local actor <strong>Susan McPhail<\/strong>.<br>\u00a0<br>Oxford Film Festival will also offer in-person filmmaker panels including a <strong>Living History Panel <\/strong>focused on archival filmmaking, a <strong>Community Film Table Read<\/strong> with filmmaker<strong> Chasity Nicole<\/strong>, and a live performance by Oxford\u2019s acting royalty Johnny and Susan McPhail.
