However, that feeling quickly fades as you pass under a large milky white tent and look back to see the light bounce off the steel sidewalk barriers of <strong>South Lamar Boulevard<\/strong>, fortifications that now guard the entrances of institutions like&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.proudlarrys.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Proud Larry\u2019s<\/strong><\/a>: a small-town pizza joint, bar, and music venue that has&nbsp;been in business since 1993. During its time on the Square, Proud Larry\u2019s has hosted live performances by renowned artists like <strong>John Mayer<\/strong>, <strong>The Black Keys<\/strong>, <strong>Elvis Costello<\/strong>, and <strong>Warren Zevon<\/strong>. However, the business of making memories through melodies was paused when the pandemic lockdown forced Proud Larry\u2019s to close in March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"2fea\">\u201cThe music industry was really banging when things came to a screeching halt,\u201d said <strong>Scott Caradine<\/strong>, owner of Proud Larry\u2019s. \u201cIt was busy; we were selling more tickets here for shows than we had ever sold.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"9d27\">Typically, Proud Larry\u2019s hosts around 200 live shows a year and averages $100,000 \u2013 $200,000 a month in revenue generated from those performances. But, after being shut down for three months and going through a fall without a proper college football season, Proud Larry\u2019s has taken a 25% hit in live music revenue; a blow that Caradine said could take years to recover from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"68cb\">\u201cI think from a business perspective we are very fortunate at Proud Larry\u2019s that we are a full-service restaurant,\u201d Caradine said. \u201cWe typically, over our 27-year existence, have done about 65% food business and 35% bar business, just you know: beer, liquor, and wine; we\u2019re able to break even, we\u2019re able to keep our head above water right now, it\u2019s tough, but we\u2019re doing it\u2026 but we missed the live music side of things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Scott-Caradine-by-Xander-Norris.jpeg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"857\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Scott-Caradine-by-Xander-Norris.jpeg?resize=640%2C857\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-108444\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Scott-Caradine-by-Xander-Norris.jpeg?resize=765%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 765w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Scott-Caradine-by-Xander-Norris.jpeg?resize=224%2C300&amp;ssl=1 224w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Scott-Caradine-by-Xander-Norris.jpeg?resize=768%2C1028&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Scott-Caradine-by-Xander-Norris.jpeg?resize=1147%2C1536&amp;ssl=1 1147w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Scott-Caradine-by-Xander-Norris.jpeg?w=1200&amp;ssl=1 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Scott Caradine; photo by Alexander Norris.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"2427\">Since re-opening in June, Proud Larry\u2019s hasn\u2019t had live music for about nine months. But, that all changed on Nov. 6 when Proud Larry\u2019s staged a 40-table reduced capacity concert featuring&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/will-griffith-oxfords-favorite-bartender-and-guitarist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Will Griffith<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 known musically as <strong>The Great Dying<\/strong> \u2014 a local folk-rock singer-songwriter and bartender at Proud Larry\u2019s. The Great Dying has a rotating roster of Oxford artists, but the act usually involves Griffith on vocals and guitar accompanied by <strong>Craig Pratt <\/strong>on guitar or <strong>Kell Kellum<\/strong> on slide guitar. Born in the Mississippi Delta, Griffith describes his music as \u201cdark country\u201d because it\u2019s an amalgamation of punk rock and country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"38df\">After having his tour canceled by COVID-19 earlier this year, Griffith said the experience of playing in front of a live audience again was the ultimate high for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"abb9\">\u201cI haven\u2019t played in front of a crowd in about 244 days, and I was just stoned,\u201d Griffith said. \u201cI was so high on the feeling of performing again; excuse my language, but everybody there was so horny for live music, people that were there were music fans and fans of The Great Dying, so it just could not have been a better situation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p><iframe width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Hw4XLf2Jmgo\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n<p id=\"17dd\">Caradine said The Great Dying\u2019s concert was such a success in terms of people adhering to Proud Larry\u2019s COVID-19 guidelines during the show. As long as fans play by the rules, Caradine thinks he now has a good template to follow for future shows at Proud Larry\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"1aac\">\u201cSince that worked out, we said okay this model will work,\u201d Caradine said. \u201cIt\u2019s not the same as packing kids or people, in general, in here for a concert, but it\u2019s an outlet for live music, for the fan experience, for the artists experience and for the business model that we can do business this way, our bar can sell some drinks, and it\u2019s not the same as it was before\u2026 but, it\u2019s a start.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ffad\">Caradine has spoken with some friends who are still hesitant about attending live performances at venues, but for the most part, he said a lot of people he\u2019s talked to are really excited to have live performances back, even if it\u2019s in the form of an hour and a half, limited capacity in-door show with masks when standing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Larrys-stage-by-Xander-Norris.jpeg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Larrys-stage-by-Xander-Norris.jpeg?resize=640%2C480\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-108445\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Larrys-stage-by-Xander-Norris.jpeg?w=875&amp;ssl=1 875w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Larrys-stage-by-Xander-Norris.jpeg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Larrys-stage-by-Xander-Norris.jpeg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>The state at Proud Larry&#8217;s. photo by Alexander Norris.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"94ab\">\u201cA lot of people are really itching to go see live music,\u201d Caradine said. \u201cThey want to go in a safe space and see live music; they want to go outside and see it, where they can space out from people and get the experience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"eb56\">However, Oxford\u2019s bigger concert venues like&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelyricoxford.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Lyric<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;are not taking any chances right now with limited capacity performances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"3387\">\u201cCertainly, limited capacity would be a big help in a lot of respects,\u201d Said <strong>Lindsay Dillion-Maginnis<\/strong>, general manager of The Lyric. \u201cBut it\u2019s also the hardest to enforce because if you cut the capacity of The Lyric down to half, you\u2019re still going to have half of those people who are going to want to be as close as possible to the band; so for all the solutions that we have, we seem to have a new set of problems that will arise.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"0c44\">Live music is a huge part of The Lyric\u2019s business; according to Dillion-Maginnis it\u2019s included in 99% of the venue\u2019s events. In a typical year, The Lyric hosts anywhere from 50\u201375 ticketed shows \u2014 not including other events like sorority formals and weddings that also feature live music \u2014 but this year has been far from typical for the venue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"73ce\">Dillion-Maginnis said after having a record-breaking year in 2019, The Lyric has pushed all of its ticketed shows to next summer. Since its last show on Feb. 29, The Lyric has done a handful of contracted events, but Dillion-Maginnis said for all intents and purposes the venue is closed right now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"a16f\">\u201cWe\u2019ve been around now for 12 years and the business is solid, but it can\u2019t sustain this forever,\u201d Dillion-Maginnis said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Lyric-by-xander-norris-1.jpeg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Lyric-by-xander-norris-1.jpeg?resize=640%2C480\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-108448\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Lyric-by-xander-norris-1.jpeg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Lyric-by-xander-norris-1.jpeg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Lyric-by-xander-norris-1.jpeg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Lyric-by-xander-norris-1.jpeg?w=1200&amp;ssl=1 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lyric is not alone; according to a 2020 survey of independent concert venue owners conducted by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nivassoc.org\/?_ga=2.260343497.512964305.1604684456-419562087.1604684456\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>National Independent Venue Association<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;(NIVA), 90% of independent music venues could close forever if they don\u2019t receive significant financial aid soon. NIVA is a non-profit group that supports over 2,000 independent live venue owners and promoters in all 50 states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"9eff\">Formed back in April when the pandemic shut down live music, NIVA\u2019s mission is to use its resources to sustain the country\u2019s \u201cecosystem\u201d of independent venues and promoters; this includes advocating for the passage of the <strong>Save our Stages Act<\/strong> (SSA), which is part of the $2.2 trillion\u00a0<strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/liveforlivemusic.com\/news\/save-our-stages-act-relief-package\/\" target=\"_blank\">Heroes Act<\/a>,<\/strong> a relief package passed by the House of Representatives in October. If the Senate and the President approve the Heroes Act, it will provide over $10 billion in funding for independent venues in the form of loans and non-repayable grants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"1060\">\u201cIf real support comes, we can have the strongest independent ecosystem that we\u2019ve ever had coming out of this,\u201d Said Stephen Chilton, vice president of NIVA and owner of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.therebellounge.com\/about\/\"><strong>The Rebel Lounge<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;in Phoenix, Arizona. \u201cIf we can get aid, we\u2019re going to see a great thriving community after this, but if we can\u2019t get aid it\u2019s going to be devastating; we are going to lose venues by the thousands.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"27a4\">The stimulus bill\u2019s funding will help cover six months\u2019 worth of payroll and operating expenses, which is a big deal for an industry, that according to trade publication&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pollstar.com\/article\/pollstar-projects-2020-total-box-office-would-have-hit-122-billion-144197\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pollstar<\/a><\/strong>, could lose as much as $8.9 billion in revenue this year. But, as Variety Magazine&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2020\/legit\/features\/live-entertainment-coronavirus-broadway-music-theater-1234703918\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">points out<\/a>, that figure \u201cdoesn\u2019t include the losses of income by musicians, technicians, dancers, and others in its sprawling supply chain.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"2841\">\u201cThere are tons of artists out there that would normally be working and gigging back and forth making money, and that work is just not there,\u201d Said&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordeagle.com\/2020\/09\/15\/musically-adjusting-to-the-times-a-q-a-with-damein-wash\/\">Damein Wash<\/a>, a local singer, songwriter, arranger, and pianist. \u201cSo, anything to put people back to work would be great; not to mention to just save the performance industry because we are needed, absolutely we are\u2026 people work all week and to have a nice concert to go to or somewhere they can breathe free and not have to worry about the stress of the mundaneness of everyday life; that\u2019s super important for everyone, not just the musicians.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IN074KUwXG4\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p id=\"68db\" class=\"hy hz gh ia b ib js ic id ie jt if ig ih ju ii ij ik jv il im in jw io ip ir cs eu\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The loss of independent music venues, concert halls, and theatres is also a major blow to the U.S. economy and to local artists like Griffith and Wash who make their living performing in front of crowds. According to a 2017 study by the National Endowment for the Arts, the value added by arts and culture to the U.S. economy is \u201cfive times greater than the value from the agricultural sector.\u201d The study also points out that in 2017 the Arts and Cultural Production Satellite Account found that arts and culture contributed $877.8 billion, or 4.5%, to the nation\u2019s gross domestic product.<\/p>\n<p id=\"bd91\" class=\"hy hz gh ia b ib js ic id ie jt if ig ih ju ii ij ik jv il im in jw io ip ir cs eu\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">As much as they help fuel the national economy, independent venues like The Lyric and Proud Larry\u2019s are more than just a business.
