{"id":107016,"date":"2020-11-02T10:22:45","date_gmt":"2020-11-02T16:22:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=107016"},"modified":"2020-11-02T10:22:51","modified_gmt":"2020-11-02T16:22:51","slug":"mississippi-state-department-of-healths-office-of-tobacco-control-receives-two-awards-for-smokefree-efforts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/mississippi-state-department-of-healths-office-of-tobacco-control-receives-two-awards-for-smokefree-efforts\/","title":{"rendered":"Mississippi State Department of Health&#8217;s Office of Tobacco Control Receives Two Awards for Smokefree Efforts"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The <strong>Mississippi State Department of Health<\/strong>\u2019s (MSDH) <strong>Office of Tobacco Control<\/strong> placed first in two main categories presented by the <strong>American Nonsmoker\u2019s Rights<\/strong> (ANR) Foundation at its annual Smokefree Indoor Air Challenge and Voices for Smokefree Air Awards Ceremony: the Smokefree Air Challenge award and the Smokefree Air Challenge E-Cigarettes award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The virtual awards ceremony was established by ANR to acknowledge and recognize states that excel in passing 100 percent smokefree provisions in workplaces, restaurants, and bars. Currently, Mississippi has 171 smokefree cities with the passage of comprehensive smokefree air ordinances, 137 of which have ordinance that include restrictions on electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe smokefree air policies implemented by these cities will protect all employees and customers in businesses and other public places from the harmful effects of secondhand smoke,\u201d said <strong>Amy Winter<\/strong>, Director of the Office of Tobacco Control at MSDH. \u201cThere is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2019, a total of 14 Mississippi cities passed comprehensive smokefree air ordinances.
