{"id":104023,"date":"2020-09-30T11:18:25","date_gmt":"2020-09-30T16:18:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=104023"},"modified":"2020-09-30T12:09:24","modified_gmt":"2020-09-30T17:09:24","slug":"university-of-mississippi-isom-center-kicks-off-sixth-sarahfest-with-facebook-live-concert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/university-of-mississippi-isom-center-kicks-off-sixth-sarahfest-with-facebook-live-concert\/","title":{"rendered":"University of Mississippi Isom Center Kicks Off Sixth Sarahfest with Facebook Live Concert"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>This year&#8217;s festival focuses on connecting communities through digital events<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Sarah Isom Center for Women and Gender Studies<\/strong> at the <strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong> is kicking off the sixth annual <strong>Sarahfest <\/strong>on Saturday, October 3 with a Facebook Live concert by musician and <strong>University of Memphis<\/strong> student <strong>Jordan Occasionally<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The yearly festival recognizes women&#8217;s contributions to visual arts, literature, music and media. This year&#8217;s theme, Connecting Communities, grew out of a focus on digital spaces brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, the visual arts portion of the festival will move from the gallery into the community. The festival&#8217;s artists will be transforming public spaces into displays of their work. The art also will be printed on postcards so that participants can share with people in other communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Since the world has gone digital due to the pandemic, we wanted to focus on digital artists who&#8217;ve been put to work connecting people with each other through art forms like graphic design,&#8221; said <strong>Kevin Kozart<\/strong>, the center&#8217;s operations coordinator and coordinator of community engaged learning and research. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;These artists are working to connect communities in a time when we&#8217;re so disconnected.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year&#8217;s programing will run through November 7 when it will culminate with a prerecorded concert from <strong>Teneia Sanders<\/strong>, an award-winning musician and songwriter from <strong>Jackson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sarahfest events include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>October 3 at 6 pm \u2013 Jordan Occasionally<\/li><li>October 15 at 6 pm \u2013 &#8220;All We&#8217;ve Got&#8221; documentary screening and Q&amp;A with director Alexis Clements<\/li><li>October 21 at 1 pm \u2013 The&nbsp;&#8220;yoU Me Music Hour&#8221;&nbsp;podcast launch<\/li><li>October 22 at 4 pm \u2013 Queer studies lecture featuring Robert Fieseler<\/li><li>November 7 at 6 pm \u2013 Teneia Sanders concert<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re very excited about our fall lineup for Sarahfest,&#8221; said <strong>Theresa Starkey<\/strong>, associate director and instructional associate professor of gender studies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The center has reimagined what an arts and music festival can look like; thanks to the help of our campus and community partners.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We hope that by utilizing different media forms, we can&nbsp;reach a diverse and broader audience.
