The degree wasn&#8217;t her victory alone, though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I have always had some wonderful cheerleaders in my corner, with my dad being my biggest role model; my husband, two wonderful daughters, my mother-in-law and sister have shared the cheering squad with him,&#8221; said Turner, who also thanked her co-workers in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/u7061146.ct.sendgrid.net\/ls\/click?upn=4tNED-2FM8iDZJQyQ53jATUa8-2B0-2FYTPEQjBOhuC0xwrq8-3D13hs_qpsnPIXERHFtyQtkeuXoKFQCzNknNFEqgTJ27sMRMrLh5QNIq130IMzYmLysDkJ1qmhqDNdhlQyiPxB5hsi9SkXdo1mrG-2F2oTeBhn2-2BwUwesJCOFf0Uo550-2BNJtY6EINH7OpVqF404HC1TUmVCoF7JnT6D8GXAoM-2F1OG0VWj9XOL3oUfGTGxfzjoOHHk1V1zw9SZCZ373d-2BN8ONGLWFhOmrlLuJGmArZXUnELUO-2BDs7yQ1oatPDPNgaKFpi8PBi64iNqtBgq9niTThs-2Fm4LmxrIzRQJ7MskahyeBRDDrO7ZIzLDeuzbPZWsWQ1E2Piw5LJ5-2BKQlTYqEZtLIkw2u5CkL1ylJW5hsmqLObdYteBlY-3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Center for Manufacturing Excellence<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Of course, my bachelor&#8217;s degree is just the beginning of what God has for me and my family,&#8221; she said. &#8220;My favorite scripture is Romans 8:28, &#8216;And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to his purpose.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There are so many times I wanted to stop or give up, but he had another plan for me.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turner&#8217;s story of perseverance and balancing work and academics is one repeated by staff members around campus, as she is among 27 UM staff members to earn either a bachelor&#8217;s, master&#8217;s or doctoral degree during the 2019-20 academic year, including six who finished their degrees in August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Known as <strong>Red and Blue Graduates<\/strong>, these Ole Miss employees successfully navigated the university educational experience while simultaneously working as full-time employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;As an institution committed to transforming lives through education, it is rewarding to know that UM employees are taking advantage of that opportunity as well,&#8221; <strong>Provost Noel Wilkin<\/strong> said. &#8220;They are an inspiration to all of us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;And while the individuals are the ones who truly reap the rewards of additional education, I know that this also makes us a stronger institution.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the past two years, these graduates have been celebrated publicly with a <strong>Red and Blue Celebration of Achievement<\/strong>. The\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/u7061146.ct.sendgrid.net\/ls\/click?upn=4tNED-2FM8iDZJQyQ53jATUdP4R4vG86Xe09iZVvwXWXlq5qflVAMXEruA0X5W3Z-2BXlaY2gDfjeoPUqLlL7q2D8ej9OVZpnsEsm-2B-2BtUpGNdTQ-3D71s2_qpsnPIXERHFtyQtkeuXoKFQCzNknNFEqgTJ27sMRMrLh5QNIq130IMzYmLysDkJ1qmhqDNdhlQyiPxB5hsi9SkXdo1mrG-2F2oTeBhn2-2BwUwesJCOFf0Uo550-2BNJtY6EINH7OpVqF404HC1TUmVCoF7JnT6D8GXAoM-2F1OG0VWj9XOL3oUfGTGxfzjoOHHk1V1zw9SZCZ373d-2BN8ONGLWFhOv0aMvGMr23vUEQVHR2-2BJRRoAG-2BWFN8hG9s39s8gD-2BHCUSURzLX8ETtwaH05qIS2UkXGu-2BydO-2BgJ4x9s8gpm2u9hJDnvIUzpX9ovfIJR8cPUvJH1T3nY8gpcOq9cHIk-2FDXJSp72TBIftEkzUDW8BgWw-3D\" target=\"_blank\">inaugural ceremony was conducted in 2018<\/a>\u00a0to recognize the achievements of staff members earning degrees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thirty-two employees were honored in that initial event, with 24 more full-time staff members&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/u7061146.ct.sendgrid.net\/ls\/click?upn=4tNED-2FM8iDZJQyQ53jATUdP4R4vG86Xe09iZVvwXWXlq5qflVAMXEruA0X5W3Z-2BXlaY2gDfjeoPUqLlL7q2D8Zg2wmeeIKU02IkB43oWl1BKKB5LfKglJx-2FovJFdNrBRN4HK_qpsnPIXERHFtyQtkeuXoKFQCzNknNFEqgTJ27sMRMrLh5QNIq130IMzYmLysDkJ1qmhqDNdhlQyiPxB5hsi9SkXdo1mrG-2F2oTeBhn2-2BwUwesJCOFf0Uo550-2BNJtY6EINH7OpVqF404HC1TUmVCoF7JnT6D8GXAoM-2F1OG0VWj9XOL3oUfGTGxfzjoOHHk1V1zw9SZCZ373d-2BN8ONGLWFhOjvb8hgn0yrgm-2F0vF8-2FnZRZsCcNsRaewRy4I6UkKVqcXAxW37TvWfFBI8e2-2Fe68x8GqJrQdtuoLuiVPH1nOpfsEvBExoPYZwWF5YXl1Xp-2BGXElHzG1SYitBlGYsnybG2hr1vjm1Mle7pMLoo8krwmIw-3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">being honored in 2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the planned third annual celebration was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, these graduates are to be admired, <strong>Associate Provost Donna Strum<\/strong> said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We are so proud of the employee graduates and pleased that they wanted to continue to advance their education,&#8221; she said. &#8220;We know it took tremendous effort, dedication and sacrifice. Their accomplishments are impressive and an inspiration to others.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 27 staff members who obtained degrees this year are employed across campus, working jobs that assure student success, campus safety, university development, student-athlete triumphs, information technology advancement and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All these staff members balanced working full-time jobs with classes, and then studying and preparing for exams while not working. Many were also parents, spouses and caregivers on top of their work and academic commitments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And while support was found at home, they also found comfort and aid among their co-workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For <strong>Angie Gurner<\/strong>, who works in the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/u7061146.ct.sendgrid.net\/ls\/click?upn=fnjKVEtEq7-2F-2B3m6pq3DC0AsftkBXn5qnxWN9y6GKDhoe03itqK3yqVSZd6-2BH7-2BdilM6V_qpsnPIXERHFtyQtkeuXoKFQCzNknNFEqgTJ27sMRMrLh5QNIq130IMzYmLysDkJ1qmhqDNdhlQyiPxB5hsi9SkXdo1mrG-2F2oTeBhn2-2BwUwesJCOFf0Uo550-2BNJtY6EINH7OpVqF404HC1TUmVCoF7JnT6D8GXAoM-2F1OG0VWj9XOL3oUfGTGxfzjoOHHk1V1zw9SZCZ373d-2BN8ONGLWFhOi6NO96Iz-2FmvUGSmxYnrBz-2BZUXXBkzoBptZxC9vhr0HeQs0-2BLzhSAkZGb59MpLcrqd-2B89SGATq-2Bed5sSYTE8kD6bMRUtY3P27XYkOdB0tIRY99vD7zgC92CvMl20yY1jFeV-2Bm6ELE5kZrQA4E7n2C2w-3D\" target=\"_blank\">School of Education<\/a>&#8216;s Student Advising and Field Experience office, her bachelor&#8217;s degree in university studies accomplishes a more-than-25-year mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gurner initially attended UM in 1995 and later earned an associate&#8217;s degree elsewhere. But since joining the Ole Miss staff in 2014, Gurner worked toward her bachelor&#8217;s, which was awarded in August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Over the years, I have had exceptional instructors in such courses as Spanish, education and journalism,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Since working in the School of Education, I feel I have had the most support since beginning my career at Ole Miss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<strong>Dr. Whitney Webb<\/strong>, <strong>Ms. Donna Patterson<\/strong>, <strong>Ms. Kara Parham<\/strong> and <strong>Ms. Cindy Misita<\/strong> have continuously encouraged me. Shout out to the College of Liberal Arts student services family!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While their reasons for pursuing degrees are as unique as the paths they took, the Red and Blue Graduates realized the opportunity to earn a degree while working at the university was one to seize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Being able to pursue my Ph.D. (in higher education) while working full time was an opportunity too good to pass up,&#8221; said <strong>E. Gratitude is not a strong enough word for how I feel about my experience.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With their new degrees, these staff members are ready to put what they learned in the classroom into practice, making a positive impact on campus with the knowledge they gained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve had the good fortune of experiencing our new Master of Fine Arts in documentary expression program from both sides \u2013 as both a\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/u7061146.ct.sendgrid.net\/ls\/click?upn=4tNED-2FM8iDZJQyQ53jATUUzE4-2FmqIw-2F9B8I22KKwrHt44dQD-2F4vshiP8IxpWBTx8wdsI_qpsnPIXERHFtyQtkeuXoKFQCzNknNFEqgTJ27sMRMrLh5QNIq130IMzYmLysDkJ1qmhqDNdhlQyiPxB5hsi9SkXdo1mrG-2F2oTeBhn2-2BwUwesJCOFf0Uo550-2BNJtY6EINH7OpVqF404HC1TUmVCoF7JnT6D8GXAoM-2F1OG0VWj9XOL3oUfGTGxfzjoOHHk1V1zw9SZCZ373d-2BN8ONGLWFhOhlcJEGahDKbnjMhSa-2BqXymOHNARpoSxlGkBgOns9WXL24ft9oHHSvcdnYxQfMcIy8R-2FYI1zCwuIYNbAC2lpFPs-2BaHGTPbBXiwa0pijfAfoGPKM62CJE-2BA5vauAq0t655ZGtU-2FsZ6ghjUvgR7sXbE4w-3D\" target=\"_blank\">Center for the Study of Southern Culture<\/a>\u00a0administrator and as a student,&#8221; said <strong>James G. Thomas Jr.<\/strong>, the center&#8217;s associate director of publications, who recently earned his M.F.A. &#8220;I enjoy being on each side of the teaching podium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t suppose I&#8217;d be in Barnard Observatory at all if I didn&#8217;t have a love of learning, and I&#8217;m surrounded by incredibly talented students and colleagues.
