{"id":102422,"date":"2020-09-30T20:38:34","date_gmt":"2020-10-01T01:38:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=102422"},"modified":"2020-09-30T19:53:29","modified_gmt":"2020-10-01T00:53:29","slug":"two-university-of-mississippi-students-prepare-for-a-happy-landing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/two-university-of-mississippi-students-prepare-for-a-happy-landing\/","title":{"rendered":"Two University of Mississippi Students Prepare for a Happy Landing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>University of Mississippi Student Musicians Reach 10k Monthly Listeners on Spotify Following the Release of their Debut Album<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been writing and playing music for several years now, alongside my brother and his wife.&nbsp;We have been a trio for quite some time,\u201d says <strong>Matthew Hendley<\/strong>, lead singer of <strong>Happy Landing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Matthew had an internship in the Fall of 2019 with the University of Mississippi School of Journalism. He said that his love for writing and playing music did not get serious until he was in New York City. \u201cI just kind of got inspired and wrote all of these songs on the EP in New York, it\u2019s just a really inspiring place and that\u2019s where I wrote <strong>\u201cShe\u2019s Got Brooklyn\u201d<\/strong> and then it just kind of flowed out from that,\u201d said Hendley.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/reelAuemj1w\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n<p>After starting an EP in New York, Hendley talked to his brother, <strong>Jacob Hendley<\/strong>, and told him they should go to a studio and make a record. He then talked to his sister-in-law, <strong>Madison Hendley<\/strong>, and his roommate, <strong>Jacob Christianson<\/strong>, who is also a student at the University of Mississippi.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/FullSizeRender.jpg?resize=364%2C289\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-102423\" width=\"364\" height=\"289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/FullSizeRender.jpg?w=965&amp;ssl=1 965w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/FullSizeRender.jpg?resize=300%2C239&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/FullSizeRender.jpg?resize=768%2C611&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 364px) 100vw, 364px\" \/><figcaption>Matthew Hendley in the Oxford Recording studio with sound engineer, Brady Hoggard.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Ironically after this, Matthew got an ad on Instagram for <strong>Oxford Recording Studio<\/strong> and talked to the sound engineer, <strong>Brady Hoggard<\/strong> to reserve some time in the studio during this past spring.&nbsp; This opportunity led to the formation of a band named <strong>Happy Landing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMatthew and I became friends through <strong>Young Life<\/strong> and were in the same bible study.&nbsp; Matthew saw the things that I was doing with my first band that I was in named <strong>Vulpes \/ Vulpes <\/strong>and he came to one of our shows and saw me play live.&#8221; Since Matthew and Jacob were friends beforehand and knew of each others musical ability, Matthew asked Jacob if he would want to be the drummer for Happy Landing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As children, Jacob and Matthew both came from musical influences and backgrounds. When asked, Jacob said that his dad got him into drumming. &#8220;I did not get really super deep into the formal training side of things, I just kind of taught myself from then on and it was intermittent,&#8221; Christianson said.&nbsp; He continued saying how his brother is the more musical one since he has been playing guitar for the past 15 years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jacob also mentioned how even though his dad was more of the influencer in musical talent, his grandfather on his mom\u2019s side was actually in a band called <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/theroyalteens.com\/\">\u201cThe Royal Teens\u201d<\/a><\/strong>. One popular song from that band that might be recognized is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UcvjXAtzaMU\">\u201cShort Shorts\u201d<\/a><\/strong>. Matthew\u2019s influence in musical ability comes from his parents who encouraged him and his siblings to take piano lessons growing up.&nbsp; His brother, Jacob Hendley, also taught Matthew guitar.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hendley said that he got the idea of the name Happy Landing from his grandparents.&nbsp;His grandfather was in the military and would always tell them about how people would jump out of the plane and say \u201cI hope you have a happy landing\u201d.&nbsp;Every Fourth of July, Matthew&#8217;s family would have a family reunion on his grandparents&#8217; land. The name of the land was \u201cHappy Landing.\u201d&nbsp;It was a place where all of the family could come and gather- a happy landing.&nbsp;Going off of this idea of the name Matthew also added, \u201cWhen people &#8216;land&#8217; on the music I want people to be happy, dance, feel good, the music to be upbeat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p><iframe width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CJAlMw8Pj1Q\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n<p>They released their first album, <strong><em>Just Kids At Heart<\/em><\/strong>, on August 28, 2020.
