Martin, and John L. Isom who recommended naming the city after Oxford, England, in hopes of this event becoming a reality.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>1844<\/strong> \u2013 <span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>Rowan Oak<\/strong><\/span> is built<\/p>\n<p><strong>1848<\/strong> \u2013 University of Mississippi opens its doors to 80 students<\/p>\n<p><strong>1861<\/strong> \u2013 Civil War begins. Many of the area\u2019s men sign up and are shipped off to war. Grant<\/strong><\/span> fights back troops commanded by Confederate General <span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>John C. Pemberton<\/strong><\/span> and occupies Oxford for most of December. Grant abandons his headquarters here after Confederate General Earl Van Dorn overruns the Union supply depot in Holly Springs, capturing over 1,500 of Grants troops.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2298 alignleft\" title=\"ajsmith\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/ajsmith.jpg?resize=142%2C210\" alt=\"\" width=\"142\" height=\"210\" \/>1864 (August 22)<\/strong> \u2013 Union Major General <span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>Andrew Jackson Smith<\/strong><\/span> invades Oxford and orders the town to be burned.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1865<\/strong> \u2013 Civil War ends.
