Poem: “Muscadines” by James Tighe

Tighe- Muscadines

Muscadines, muscadines

Lenten-purple fruit of the land

the supreme bunchless grape

Muscadines, muscadines

the word itself derived from the Latin for Muse

she who rules from her throne of wine

Muscadines, muscadines

their overture of sweetness in the mouth and brain

testifying to the Holy Trinity of Sun, Rain, and Dirt

Muscadines, muscadines

of the “wild and haunting” taste

in the words of radio chef Lynn Rosetta-Caspar

Muscadines, muscadines

radiant Mississippi jewels

in the crown of Autumn
