Oxford, Mississippi Police Department Announces Halloween Plan

OXFORD, MISS – Halloween is this Wednesday, October 31st , and the Oxford Police Department wants everyone to have fun, but to keep safety in mind while trick-or-treating.

“Children will be trick-or-treating and walking through neighborhoods so we want to emphasize pedestrian safety, as well as driver safety,” Chief Joey East said. “Please drive slowly and be extra vigilant.”

There will be an increased presence of officers on North and South Lamar. Be prepared for slower traffic in an effort to keep trick-or-treaters safe. The OPD Safe Site will be set up in its regular location on the square in front of Visit Oxford for anyone who needs assistance.

The Oxford Police Department would recommend the following safety tips for a fun and safe trick-or-treating experience:
• Wear reflective clothing or attach reflective stripes to costumes
• Carry a flashlight
• Parents escort your children around neighborhoods and encourage them to
WALK, not run
• Masks can make it hard to see, face paint is a good alternative
• Always stay on sidewalks and use crosswalks when crossing the street
• If sidewalks are not available stay on the edge of the road and walk facing
traffic
• Drivers please stay alert and use extra caution when driving through popular
trick or treating areas

OPD suggests parents use their best judgment when taking their children out to trick-or-treat and keep an eye out for the inclement weather. Updates can be found on the National Weather Service website: www.weather.gov. The Local Voice Ligature

Oxford Police Seek Suspect

On Saturday, October 20, 2018, at approximately 8:00 PM, officers responded to an assault on Van Buren Avenue near South 5th Street. When officers arrived they spoke with the victim and found that she was grabbed from behind as she walked east on Van Buren Avenue by an unknown white male, approximately 5’11’’, wearing a dark colored zip up jacket, orange or red shirt, khaki’s and a light tan Costa ball cap with a light blue Costa symbol.

The victim was able to fight the attacker off. She then ran to a nearby residence and called 911. The suspect fled the scene running west on Van Buren Avenue towards the Ford Center parking lot where he got in a newer model white car. The suspect left the parking lot heading north towards West Jackson Avenue. As the suspect vehicle was leaving the parking lot we were able to see several vehicles on video surveillance also driving through the Ford Center lot.

If you were in the parking lot between 7:45 and 8:10 PM please contact us, you may have information that can assist. Crimestoppers has offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of this suspect. If you have any information please contact Investigator Fortner at 662-232-2400 or sfortner@oxfordpolice.net.  Attached is a picture of the car and ball cap. We believe the ball cap is the key piece to solving this crime. The Local Voice Ligature
