Oxford Man Arrested for Sexual Battery of a Child

On Saturday, September 17, 2022, Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a minor being sexually assaulted by their mother’s fiancé. Investigators began an investigation regarding the incident.

On Monday September 19, 2022, Lafayette County Investigators formally charged Jessie Bernard Jones, 48 years old of Oxford, Mississippi for one count of Sexual Battery of a Child and one count of Molesting – Touching of a Child for Lustful Purposes.

Jones was arrested Monday afternoon and transported to the Lafayette County Detention Center. Jones was issued a $100,000.00 bond, set by a Justice Court Judge. Jones is also being held on a Mississippi Department of Corrections hold.

The Office of Sheriff is a four year term filled through an at-large election process. Duties of the Sheriff involve two primary areas; law enforcement of the county and administrative. The law enforcement duties are to keep the peace in Lafayette County while administrative duties consist primarily of serving as the county jailor. Due to the growth of Lafayette County, the Sheriff Department now employs 26 deputies working four 12 hour shifts.
