  1. The film adaptation of Ode to Billie Joe is a beautiful collage of Bobbie Gentry songs. Her compositions, Benjamin, Belinda, and Oklahona River Bottom Band come to life in the movie .It was a smash hit in the summer of 1976 , with a near 50 million dollar box office( 26 million after theater owners split). Business savvy Bobbie Gentry took points on the film that was made for only a million dollars instead of up front cash. Her Warner Brothers deal gave her 10% of the net box office and 15% of all future income(rentals, television, dvd sales) of the project. She made millions. Loretta Lynn took half a million cash upfront on Coal Miners Daughter with no points on 1980 smash hit autobiographical film and lost out on tens of millions. This summer also marks the 50th anniversary of the release of the song Ode to Billie Joe .It has sold over 50 million records on over 100 covers, bringing in substantial royalties every year since its release.
