If you appreciate art and beauty, Main Squeeze Juice Bar is the place to be where you can see the magnificent new screen frame built by Jamo for their movie series.

This screen frame is majestic, appearing at once to be influenced by the schools of both Roman and Colonial design. The lines are clear and stable, not unlike a safe bank, yet the structure is inviting, keeping ones eyes comfortably on the screen without distraction.

Star quarterback Jeremiah Masoli was kicked off the University of Oregon football team after repeated run-ins with the law.

He ended up at Ole Miss and appeared to have the starting job. But Masolis status is again in limbo after an NCAA decision saying he cant play this year.

NPRs Tom Goldman has the story.

TOM GOLDMAN: It was a case of mutual need. Jeremiah Masoli was dismissed from the Oregon football team in June. He had eligibility left, and he needed a place to play.

Ole Miss, a member of the powerful Southeastern Conference, was facing the upcoming season with only two quarterbacks. Rebels head coach Houston Nutt told ESPN the addition of Masoli, who led Oregon to the Rose Bowl in January, definitely filled a need.

Mr. HOUSTON NUTT (Coach, Ole Miss) I think he makes us better, and I think he gives us depth. You got to have more than two quarterbacks in this league.

GOLDMAN: Masoli arrived at Ole Miss after he graduated from Oregon in July. He took advantage of an NCAA waiver, in place since 2007, that allows an athlete whos graduated to switch to a new school if the new school has a desired graduate program that the old school doesn't.

Masoli applied to the Parks and Recreation graduate program at Ole Miss, a program NOT offered at Oregon. He was accepted, and coach Nutt asked Masoli to join the football team.

All looked good, until the NCAA ruled on the waiver this week. Masoli was granted a waiver, but it required him to wait an entire year before playing football. The NCAA declined to talk on tape because the case is being appealed, with a decision expected soon, Ole Miss hopes before Saturday's season-opening game.

But its apparent Masolis dismissal from Oregons football team was the main reason for the decision. In a statement, the NCAA said the waiver exists to provide relief to student-athletes who transfer for academic reasons to pursue graduate studies, not to avoid disciplinary measures at the previous university.

But Ole Miss athletic director Pete Boone says the athletic component always drives these kinds of waiver requests.

Mr. PETE BOONE (Athletic Director, Ole Miss): To say that, golly, let me go find a program I like, oh, and they play football there too, you know, is somewhat naive. So I think its a hand-in-glove deal.

GOLDMAN: Since June of last year, there have been 62 graduate student waiver requests; 35 have been granted. Boone says some were granted to graduate athletes with situations similar to Masolis. Boone believes that was because the athletes werent as famous.

The NCAA says it has the discretion on each request to deny, grant without delay in eligibility or grant with a delay, as in Masolis case.

This controversy is just the latest for Masoli. Last January, he went from the high of playing in the prestigious Rose Bowl...

GOLDMAN: To the low, three weeks later, of a 911 call, identifying the Oregon quarterback as one of two men involved in a fraternity house theft of items including laptop computers.

Unidentified Man: M-A-S-O-L-I, like the football player.

GOLDMAN: Masoli admits lying to police and his coach when he said he wasnt at the frat house. But he denies being an active participant. Prosecutors never matched his fingerprints to the stolen items. Still, he pled guilty to second degree burglary, reportedly as part of a deal to avoid a trial and possible jail time.

A few months later, more trouble: marijuana possession and other charges. And Masolis precipitous fall was complete. He was dismissed by some in the media as a troublemaking thug. After spending the last month with Masoli, Ole Miss coach Nutt told ESPN he has a different take

Mr. NUTT: He could have been a captain of our football team. I pulled him aside last week and said how in the world did you get in trouble? I want to know. Good kid, very genuine, humble, very unselfish.

GOLDMAN: Masoli says hes very thankful Ole Miss is giving him a chance. The only question: when.

Thacker Mountain Radio kicks off its 2010 fall season on Thursday, September 2 at Off Square Books to begin the award-winning show�s 13th year on the air. Guests on the 6PM live broadcast will be author Michael Knight, Oxford guitarist George McConnell and acoustic duo Chauncey and the Beast. The show will broadcast every Thursday from 6-7PM through November 18 and can be heard locally on Rebel Radio 92.1FM. The program also airs every Saturday night at 7PM on Mississippi Public Broadcasting (90.3FM). Highlights of the upcoming fall season include appearances by blues harmonica legend Charlie Musselwhite (Oct 14), songwriter and author Marshall Chapman (Nov 4), the annual Southern Foodways show (Oct 21 at the Lyric), and indie songwriter Malcolm Holcombe (Sept 23).

Host Jim Dees says the show isn�t superstitious about its 13th year. �We�re dedicating this fall season to the late Evans Harrington and Barry Hannah,� he notes. �Not only were both very encouraging mentors to young writers over the years, they both loved the Lucky 13 bass lure on fishing outings. We�re embracing Lucky 13 as we honor Evans and Barry and try to produce a show each week they would be proud of.�

In a bit of symmetry, Harrington was instrumental in bringing Hannah to Ole Miss in 1982 and Hannah helped bring Thacker season premiere author Michael Knight to Ole Miss in 2005 as the John and Renee Grisham Writer-in- Residence. Knight is the author of the novel, Divining Rod; two collections of short fiction, Dogfight: And Other Stories andGoodnight, Nobody; and a collection of novellas, The Holiday Season. In his new novel, The Typist, readers enter the chaotic world of American soldier Francis Van Vancleave who is a typist for Gen. Douglas MacArthur in Tokyo in the days after WWII when the city was occupied by conquering American forces. Knight details the carousing and cunning of the American G.I.s and the economic plight of the post-bombing Japanese. The two cultures collide and violence and exploitation occur, but Knight also portrays heartfelt relationships amid the confusion. Folk/blues duo Chauncey and the Beast (Chauncey Mauney and Ann Anna Donnell) first played together in the summer of 2008 at the Taylor Farmers Market. Besides music, the pair are also actors. Chauncey earned his BFA in acting from Ole Miss in 2009 and Anna will do likewise next year. Their haunting original lyrics and seamless vocal blend have been a hit on a number of local stages including Music in the Hall as well as the Oxford Rhythm Revival. Over a two-decade career in music, George McConnell has served as lead guitarist in the bands Beanland, Kudzu Kings and Widespread Panic. Jeremiah Masoli being denied playing quarterback for Ole Miss is worse than Charles Woodson winning the Heisman.

Quarterbacks, Presidents and liquor store owners come and go, but through it all Proud Larrys continues to book new and exciting music through Oxford that might otherwise never hit these shores. That happens tonight as the New York band Tennis plays Larrys with Dent May.

Tennis has a great Beach Boyesque lounge sound, sort of a psychedelic Shirlees. They have an interesting back story, too.

The Oxford Music Festival is a huge amount of work made possible by sponsors and the effort of many dedicated volunteers.

Next year, it would be cool to find a way to work local labels and studios and studios into the mix.

Hill Country Records is one such label and they have just released a great new record that has one of my all-time favorite covers.

The record is Eric Deaton and Kinney Kimbrough playing Junior Kimbrough songs. PLAY JUNIOR was recorded in one day at Delta Recording Service and will be on sale at the Eric Deaton Trio show Thursday night at Proud Larrys as part of the Oxford Music Festival. The record is an ode to Eric's mentor and features Junior's son and drummer, Kinney.

IT WAS THE NEWS that Malone and Hyde Wholesale Grocery Company is closing that prompted me to go over to Tupelo last week and pay a visit. I spent four years on the dock of the cavernous warehouse before the four I invested in Ole Miss. I learned more about what it takes to live in this world in that old red brick building than I ever could in all the journalism, political science, history and other assorted classes the Lyceum deemed necessary. I learned how important our physical laborers are, not only to America but also to the rest of the world. I learned to respect the men who sweated through searing summers and shivered through arctic winters in order to draw a paycheck and support their families. I learned about the infectious camaraderie that grows between men working a sixty-hour week of muscle-numbing honest labor.

Everything was pretty much the same except for one glaring difference.

Lawrence Edwards, a supervisor, was no longer part of the crew. We all called him Mister Ed. Everyone wanted to work for him because he was a genuinely good person and it showed in the way he ran his end of the dock. You still worked when Mister Ed was your boss, but somehow the nights were not as long and the hundred-pound sacks of potatoes felt like only eighty, at the most.

Mister Ed was the type of person who would smile and speak to you after a 15-hour night of physical and mental strain. He would praise you behind your back and would never ever speak badly of anyone. If he possibly could, he would make your job easier.

If he had a truck trailer that was a 110 degrees inside and needed me to pack it with 60-pound bales of flour, I would try to talk him into finding me something to do along the lines of riding around deep in the warehouse on a fork lift. This dock labor was a man's job, and he tried to make it easier on 19-year-old punks. You didn't mind sweating for him because you knew he would go to bat for you when the time came.

The day after John Lennon was murdered, Mr. Ed asked me, �Reckon what makes somebody want to do something like that? Sometimes I don�t understand this world. That fella was just going home and got shot and killed. I been staying up to watch it on TV.� I�ve never forgotten that, because I knew Mister Ed had no special affinity for the Beatle, but did know the difference between right and wrong.

On that dock in an industrial section of Tupelo, Mississippi in the early 1980s, Mister Ed was not judged by the color of the skin that stretched across his bulging muscles. He was seen only as a good, honest man. He was the type of supervisor who would ask about your family while he helped you do your work.

Just before I quit Malone & Hyde, Mister Ed was hospitalized for exhaustion. The general consensus was that after 20 years of working all night and part of the day, he was overdue a long rest.

The doctors said it was cancer. Mister Ed went under the knife and returned to the dock. The strenuous nights took their toll and in 1987 the doctors said they couldn't get it all. It was time to go home for good.

I went to visit Mister Ed at his home. The muscles, once tight, were relaxed. His gait had slowed; he bore the scars of operations undergone in the will to live. The smile, wide and sincere, was still there. He told me about his dizzy spells, his ever-present fatigue, and how rough the chemotherapy treatments were. He told me how much he missed Malone & Hyde, being with the men, working for a living. He told me of the loneliness of each day, with family working and children in college, with no choice but to leave him at home with one of God's greatest tests.

"Chico, my chances are slim," he said. We were watching the Lakers and Pistons play basketball, but I had no idea who was winning. All of my thoughts went out to Mister Ed and his family. It�s useless to try and figure these things out, because it isn�t possible. It defies everything that should be.

Happy birthday, Anne Scott Barrett!

Woofstock, a fundraiser for the Oxford Lafayette Humane Society, was a very cool thing out in the county Saturday, with local dogs, live music, food, beer and so on.

I was admiring the poster art below and did not know until later that it was created by native Oxonian Anne Purdon!

Another great thing out at Woofstock was the My Michelle's food table, where they were handing out ultra-delicious samples of their happening dishes. I've been going to parties at the house next door to My Michelle's and have been wondering about the place for awhile and had I known it was Michelle Rounsaville's, would have tried it sooner. My Michelle's, located on that most Oxford of streets, 18th, prepares excellent meals finely fit for home or the Grove (or catering) and their menu is at the end of this e-mail.

Yet another great thing out there at Woofstock was great dog-lover Shannon McNally, who had along her great gang of road dogs, also known as her band, Hot Sauce. Shannon and band treated the crowd to a wonderful set of her wonderful sound and DAMN not only can she bark out some leads on that electric guitar, she does it distinctively, it's her sound.

That sound has an interesting future: Shannon is raising the money to get her new record out through a cool site called Kickstarter. Fans and supporters are able to get involved and earn some very nice rewards.

One of the things I miss most about Larry Brown is running into him in Larson's Big Star or Sneed's Hardware. Larry was as real as it gets and something I liked most about him is that despite all the well-deserved literary awards and accolades, he reminded me of someone, anyone, from the rural area I grew up in on the far other side of Tupelo. He was a good man.

I learned yesterday of the recent deaths of two good Oxford men.

Kyle Welch reminded me of Larry Brown. He was the same kind of man. Kyle helped me, when he did not have to, with farm work out in the Mississippi sun and ate barbecue with me in the air conditioning of Littlejohn's. He was knowledgeable and I respected him.

Thomas Ethridge was a scholar, musician, statesman, soldier, lawyer and family man. The looming Ethridge building is named for him. I interviewed him about eleven years ago and he was an absolute pleasure to be in the company of and know.

Stevie Ray Vaughn died 20 years ago today.

I did not find out until a week or so later, as I was at sea in the Bering, off the coast of Alaska. A plane dropped mail and a letter from my mother ended with:

�P.S. Isn�t it a shame about Stevie Ray Vaughn?� and I thought, �What?�

Grand in my memory is seeing him in Memphis with Brian Setzer opening. They ended the show jamming together and it was sublime.

TRIPPING OVER MY THUMB:

Like most of us, I wear my underwear loose.

When I stand at my hitch-hiking spot where University Avenue and the Yocona Highway meet, I sometimes get a nice breeze up my shorts.

A week or so ago, I had to move my spot about eight feet because ants moved in.

One day I was standing there and felt a sting on my sandaled foot. And then, quickly, another. I looked down and my feet were covered with little black ants. There was more stinging and then some slight jumping around and not-slight cursing by me. I crushed all I could against my skin, rolling them until they looked like tiny black joints. They had built a colony right where I usually stood with my hitching sign, so I moved the eight feet away.

I hitch out almost to Yocona every day because I have six dogs who expect to get fed and ear-rubbed. Five are former strays who believe they have identified heaven and the one I've had since the day he was born, well, he thinks he is God.

Anyway, there's this gal here in Oxford who loves dogs, especially strays, and she cooks a big bag of chicken for them. I put the chicken in my backpack and take it to them when I hitch out there.

Yesterday, I got to my hitching spot, plopped my backpack down and held up my "Yocona" sign. About 23 minutes later, an old Ford Taurus pulled over with an old white couple in the front and a big pile of clothes in the back. I wedged into the back, pushing over the clothes enough to make room. There was no place to put my backpack, so I held it between my legs.

The old white man driver stared straight ahead and the old white woman passenger turned around and smiled sweetly. As we started moving, I thanked them for stopping and told them where I was going.

We got about 300 yards down the road and the old white woman turned to me and offered a copy of The Watchtower.

"We're Jehovah's Witnesses and this is our magazine," she said. "Can I talk to you about our faith?"

Just minutes before, I had been standing on the side of the road and now I was riding on the road toward my dogs, so I said "Yes ma'am."

So we were riding down the road, she was talking and I was just happy to be there, wedged as I was back there with my backpack of chicken between my legs.

We were maybe a mile into the journey when I felt the first sting and it was on a testicle (the left one).

Then there was another sting (on the same testicle) and then another (on the other testicle, the one that doesn't hang as low).

Then a sting on my leg and then another on the right testicle.

I moved my backpack and there, coming out of it where it wasn't zipped closed all the way, was a big boil of ants. Quickly, there were more stings and I wasn't surprised, as there were ants, legions of them, on my legs and lap.

The old man stared straight ahead, still mute, and the old woman also looked straight ahead, talking about the Jehovah's Witness program and occasionally commenting on people's yards.

Me, I was attempting to kind of stand in the back of the Taurus while knocking off me all the ants I could while not making too much of a scene. I looked in the backpack and ants were all over the chicken. I zipped it shut, got stung some more and twisted around some more in the back seat. I had just gotten things sort of calmed down when we got to my house and I could get out.

"Praise the Lord," I said, and thanked them as they pulled away.

It took me 18 minutes to clean off all the ants, but the dogs loved that chicken.

She really ruined it for me:

Lunchtime today and this hot blonde came out of the liquor store next to my office as I was heading into the building. She was climbing up into a big S.U.V. festooned with pink sorority stickers when I spotted the Main Squeeze Juice Bar t-shirt she was wearing.

"Hey, cool shirt," I called out.

She leaned out and looked back at me, flashing a tens-of-thousands-of-daddy's-money smile.

"Thank you," she said.

I continued, as she was shutting the door:

"Hey, it's Ronzo's birthday."

She leaned out again, frowning slightly, and said:

"Sir?"

The Big Event is at Proud Larry's as Colour Revolt is back in town to rock the venerable Oxford music club as only a venerable Oxford band can.

All the way back to the days when that little blonde guy was playing that big Rickenbacker bass, Colour Revolt has injected clean and heavy rock and roll into the local scene with the mature and sublime lyrics written by and sang by Jess Coppenbarger.

It's been am interesting last 18 months for the band and last week they've released their new album, The Cradle, which has been getting great reviews from The Wall Street Journal to the Tupelo Daily Journal.

They play tonight at Larrys with Pujol and also-Oxford-favorites Sleeping Bulls.
