It’s probably pretty apparent by now that we hold a special place in our hearts for food. We love to eat, and when we aren’t eating, we’re talking, reading or writing about eating! So, for this installment of Two Taste Buds, we’re taking a departure from the regular format and musing about some of our recent eating adventures and conversations. Recent forays around central Mississippi have yielded some fantastic meals and restaurants: Check out Capers in Batesville, Bravo! Italian Restaurant & Bar in Jackson, and the Ricotta Spinach side dish at Giardina’s in Greenwood. If you’re traveling, give them a try….Locally, I’m loving the new Aged Goat Cheese appetizer (sans prosciutto) on L&M’s summer menu; the tomato bruschetta is also lovely, though I’ll probably stick with the herbed ricotta and honey variation….Was ecstatic to find good horchata, a rice-based beverage with cinnamon and sugar, at the new El Taqueria Milagro on Jackson Avenue….Sampled Peter Cleary’s winning key lime pie recipe at the Mid-Town Farmers’ Market on July 14—pretty tasty even after some time in the heat—but I doubt Liz and I will enter next year with a half-meat, half-veggie pie. We’d rather be judges….Speaking of sweet things, Yocona’s honey-laden Baked Brie appetizer last week was divine—it would also make a fantastic dessert, though the restaurant has just added a few new desserts to its roster….But I’m not a sweets person, which is why I just discovered Sno Biz (after living in Oxford for more than a year). Still, I love the whimsical decor and the Tiger’s Blood shaved ice; a stop here provides a perfect ending—or kickoff—to any Southern summer night.

I’m all about trying new things, and I just learned about two new restaurants opening soon: I know you’ve seen the posters around town for the restaurant that “runs on respect”—well, Waltz on the Square will be opening in August in the spot Madre once occupied with an eclectic menu that will include steak, fish and pasta. Another restaurant, Ravine, is set to open in early September out on County Road 321. I’ll be sure to visit both with appetite intact.…Now that the sticky summer is upon us, I always welcome food that’s light and refreshing. I recently discovered the weekend ceviche special with lime-cooked tilapia tossed with tomato and onion at Rancho Grande. If I’m feeling a little more indulgent, Holli’s Sweet Tooth is always there to cure my craving for a frosty milkshake.…Have you ever tried to find something to do on a Sunday in Oxford? Not much is open, but the brunch at L&M has fresh-squeezed OJ and some pretty awesome home fries.…When Tracy goes for horchata at El Taqueria Milagro, I stop in for the most authentic Mexican tacos in town.…Finally, if you’re ever in the vicinity of Batesville and want to try the world’s best cheese sticks, don’t pass up Capers on the Batesville Square—you won’t be disappointed.
