Greetings Friend. Let me join the masses of proud Oxonians who spent their weekend celebrating on the Square, and congratulate Mary-Kathryn Millner, the Tourism Council, and all Volunteers who put together the BEST DOUBLE DECKER FESTIVAL in years!
For the first time in recent memory, the weather was our friend our best friend! And all the good times awoke Saturday morning to a glorious, sunny, mild spring day.
Oxford’s economy received a much-desired boost as we all enjoyed great friends, phenomenal music, and (to my delight) the return of excellent BBQ.
For my part, the Pub ran like clockwork. There were no fights, not even a frown or foul word (which can happen after a long day of drinking). The Pub staff stepped to the plate, upped their game, and operated like a championship team who had been playing together for years (which they have.)
I spoke with a number of our friends in blue who seemed also to spend the day smiling…. Man, I just can’t say enough about how wonderful the day was! Thank you Oxford for your great communal spirit! Thank you OPD for your kind and watchful eye, and thank you to everyone else who showed up with their goodtime faces on and wallets open.
I want a “Free the Kegs” t-shirt. You saw them sporting around town. Hope they made you smile like they did me. The politics of that battle are over, but the spirit of the party lives on… The grand ol’ Oxford, the mystic and recent maligned, has not yet taken its last breath. Saturday proved that we still have a party in us, and that the celebration needs no hitches.
I know I speak for many when I say, let us bring an end to the politics of kneejerk fear and litigious anxiety.
It’s been a rough year for those of us who see nothing wrong with a good ol’ life affirming late-night. We don’t care if the beer is kegged or canned (as long as it’s cold). We don’t care if we have to step out in the rain to remind our lungs to kick it in gear. And we certainly don’t care whether or not our bartenders are licensed by the state, or the town. It’s all just a part of the game… And when football season is over, it’s still the best game in town.
We had a great, safe weekend, friend. Let us all be thankful for that. I’ve said it before in this space, and I’ll say it again: Life is easy, it is we who make it hard. Saturday’s overwhelmingly wonderful celebration proved it. When we all are able to step out from under our daytime burdens, allow our communal spirits a little breathing room, it’s hard to deny the joyful soul of this proud town. I can only wish such a place for everyone…
